If you have some extra items laying around the house that would be better suited in a landfill, the Lyon County Transfer Station will be starting up a free opportunity to take them off your hands this weekend.
The transfer station is beginning its annual Free Landfill Days on Saturday starting at 8 am. This will be open to all Lyon and Chase County residents. Residents must bring their April electric bill to take advantage of the free dumping and the first 1,000 lbs of solid waste will be free.
If residents exceed the 1,000 lbs limit they will then be charged the regular fee of 24.2 cents per 10 pounds of trash and 13.1 cents per 10 pounds of construction or demolition debris. No businesses will be permitted to utilize the free dumping opportunity and vehicle sizes will be restricted to passenger trucks and cars.
Emporia Solid Waste Supervisor Keith Senn says the vehicle size restriction is a relatively new addition to the free dumping program. He says the change came at the request of Lyon County Commissioners to help “tame down” the busy traffic coming through the station.
Senn encourages residents to utilize Free Landfill Days on weekdays if possible due to longer wait times on the weekends. Residents wishing to dispose of tires or any appliances with refrigerant will have to pay for the disposal of those materials.
Free Landfill Days will run until Sunday, May 22. For more information contact the transfer station by calling 620-340-6360.
