It’s hot. It’s record hot.
Tuesday’s high temperature at the Emporia Municipal Airport reached 94 degrees, breaking the old record set in 1967. Dewpoints in the low 70s all day pushed the heat index to 104, the first time Emporia has hit that mark this year.
Emporia Fire responded to at least one heat exposure call, heading to Abundant Harvest shortly before 1 pm, or just before the facility’s monthly food pantry started. Further details are pending.
Record highs could at least be matched later this week. Wednesday’s projected high of 91 would tie the current record set in 1962. Thursday could reach 90, again tying a mark set in 1962.
Milder conditions will prevail starting Friday after the first of several chances of showers and storms, which runs late Thursday night into Sunday. At the moment, the only chance of severe weather is a marginal-to-slight risk early Friday morning.

7:30 am Tuesday: Another sultry day ahead for KVOE listening area
Another summer-like day is in store for the KVOE listening area Tuesday.
Temperatures soared to 92 degrees at the Emporia Municipal Airport on Sunday. Heat index readings climbed to 98 with dewpoints in the upper 60s to around 70 degrees almost all day.
Tuesday’s high will be around 92 and heat index readings will likely be in the mid- to upper 90s again. Upper 80s to low 90s are also expected for air temperatures Wednesday and Thursday.
This approaches record heat for this time of year, but it doesn’t reset the record books just yet. Monday’s record high was 95 set in 2011. Tuesday’s record is 93 set in 1967. Wednesday’s record high is 91 set in 1962 and Thursday’s record high is 90, also from 1962.
Showers and storms will break this heat wave Thursday night. There is a slight to marginal risk of severe weather involved, with wind and hail the main concerns. More showers and storms are possible Friday and Saturday.
