After more than a decade of overseeing USD 253 Emporia’s RecXtra after-school programming, the Emporia Recreation Commission is set to pass the torch to a new entity next school year.
The Rec Commission announced via a news release Thursday that the Boys and Girls Club of South Central Kansas will be partnering with the school district to oversee afterschool programming for the 2022-23 school year. The Rec Commission has run the program for the last 12 years and Emporia Rec Director Tom McEvoy says they are excited to transfer the programming to a non-profit “that is skilled in after-school care and we will help in any way possible to ensure that this is a positive change for our community.”
It’s unclear exactly how the transition may alter the program, however, McEvoy says the ERC will assist with the transition in any way they can and is hopeful they will “convert many of our Rec Xtra staff over to the Boys & Girls Club program since they are familiar with many of the students, parents and staff at our elementary schools.”
McEvoy and ERC Assistant Director of Operations Amanda Gutierrez will join KVOE’s Talk of Emporia next Friday to discuss the transition. KVOE has also reached out to USD 253 and the Boys and Girls Club of South Central Kansas to join the program.
