Flags will fly at half-staff Sunday in honor of those in law enforcement who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
Sunday is National Peace Officer Memorial Day and Kansas Governor Laura Kelly has directed flags to be lowered from sunrise to sunset. National Peace Officer Memorial Day pays tribute to local, state and federal officers who have died or suffered significant injury in the line of duty.
In a news release Friday, Governor Kelly stated, “Kansas peace officers risk their lives daily to protect their communities, their dedication and sacrifices to keep us safe do not go unnoticed. On May 15th, and every day, we honor their service.”
Peace Officers Memorial Day began in 1962 at the decree of US President John F. Kennedy. The day culminates National Police Week which is observed the week of May 15th each year.
