The primary election cycle is moving towards an important deadline.
The candidate filing and withdrawal deadline is June 1, and Lyon County Clerk and Election Officer Tammy Vopat says her staffers are planning for an influx of filings. They are also planning for voters to turn out.
Voters have until July 12 to either register or change their current registration.
On the ballot for the Aug. 2 primary are the Lyon County Commission seat currently held by Scott Briggs, as well as township clerks, precinct committee positions and the Reading Benefit Fire at-large Position 2 slot.
At the state and national level, all House candidates are on the ballot, as well as most state positions — governor, secretary of state, attorney general, treasurer and insurance commissioner. State Board of Education positions and judicial positions are also coming up. The state ballot also includes a vote on the so-called “Value Them Both” amendment, which says the Kansas Constitution doesn’t create or continue a right to abortions and the document doesn’t mandate government funding of abortions if voters approve.
At the federal level, the US First District House position is up for election.
