Emporia’s Underground Utilities Department has completed repairs following a pair of water main breaks near the Emporia State University campus Tuesday.
The break occurred on an eight-inch line with the first break reported just before 8 am outside of 1317 Merchant. Crew members closed off water to that location just before the second break was reported outside of 1405 Merchant.
The exact cause of the breaks has not been reported. Southbound traffic in the 1400 block of Merchant was moved to the center turning lane while crews worked to repair the damage.

Emporia’s Underground Utilities Department continues early work on a pair of water main breaks near the Emporia State University campus Tuesday.
One break was reported outside 1317 Merchant just before 8 am. Crew members closed off the water for that location, only to have another break develop outside 1405 Merchant.
Repair work may continue for much of Tuesday. Currently, southbound traffic in the 1400 block of Merchant has been moved to the center turning lane, while northbound traffic is currently unaffected.

8:40 am Tuesday: Water main break confirmed near Emporia State University
Emporia’s Underground Utilities Department is working on a water main break near Emporia State University.
A break in the 1300 block of Merchant was reported just before 8 am. Underground Utilities will be working on locating the break and then starting the repair process later Tuesday.
