Area residents wanting to adopt a furry addition to the family have a special opportunity to do so Saturday.
Petsense has a special Adoptathon from 11 am to 4 pm as part of a nationwide push to get pets adopted. Humane Society of the Flint Hills Director Stephanie Achille says several local animal groups will have pets available.
Adoptions normally take up to 48 hours to process, but Achille says there may be cases where pets can be adopted Saturday. The Emporia Animal Shelter will be closed to walk-in traffic Saturday.
The event overlaps the Flinthills Mall Food Truck Rally, also beginning at 11 am.
Achille says the Emporia Animal Shelter has processed “quite a few” adoptions, but there have also been a lot of intakes as well and the dog side of the shelter is full. Achille wants residents to adopt some of the larger dogs and some of the “longer-haul” dogs who may have been at the shelter for months.
For more information about pet adoptions, call the Animal Shelter at 620-340-6345. Shelter hours are 10 am to 3 pm Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays and 10 am to 5 pm Fridays. The shelter is closed Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays.
