The city of Emporia is targeting mid-June for ending the West Sixth Avenue waterline project.
As KVOE News reported earlier this month, replacement of the water main in the middle of West Sixth is nearly finished and the city’s contractor is beginning work on connecting the new pipe to intersections, homes and businesses on the south side of the street between Lincoln and Woodland. Both this work and similar work on the north side of Sixth could take about three weeks to finish.
Currently, two-lane eastbound traffic is allowed and some — but not all — of the side street intersections are closed. Here’s City Engineer Jim Ubert:
The process will reverse when work begins affecting westbound traffic.
Ubert has said there will be access to businesses on both sides of West Sixth, and city leaders are urging residents to support those businesses during the construction process.
The city also says the contractor will receive $1,000 per day, or up to $25,000, if the project is completed by mid-June. If the project runs long, the contractor will be liable for $1,200-$2,400 per day in “liquidated damages.”
