Summer is here, school is out and that means more children out and about, families leaving for vacations and criminals looking to make what is yours theirs.
With that in mind, the Emporia Police Department is offering some helpful tips to make sure everyone stays safe and secure this summer. EPD Officers Jaffar Agha and JT Klaurens both recently joined KVOE’s Morning Show to discuss a range of topics including bike safety.
Agha says with Unbound Gravel coming this week there will no doubt be an increased presence of bikers both young and old on the streets. Klaurens says it is important for drivers to make sure they are always paying close attention to the roadway, but their attention will need to be especially high over the next week.
Along with biking, EPD is also focusing on vehicle safety for young children as Agha, the director of Emporia’s Safe Kids Coalition, says there will be a pair of Safe Kids check lanes later this summer. Check lanes allow parents to pull through and have their child’s safety seat inspected and make sure it is properly installed to provide the maximum level of security for their young riders.
Dates for those check lanes have yet to be announced, however, Agha says residents can stop by the Emporia Police Department at any time and a registered seat technician can perform an inspection. Speaking of vehicles, Agha and Klaurens are also reminding residents to take precautions to prevent their vehicles from being broken into.
Agha says simply locking your doors is a major deterrent for most criminals.
Those extra steps of security are also important for homeowners according to Klaurens. With many families likely planning summer vacation trips either out of town or out of state, Klaurens says it is important to make sure your home is locked up, have someone frequently come by to check on your home or contact the Emporia Police Department to schedule a regular check up on your home while you are away.
