Area residents are encouraged to take in Emporia’s Memorial Day services Monday.
It’s a weekend where a lot of people are thinking of summer activities, but event organizer Laura Webb wants residents to consider the true meaning of the holiday.
Activities will include the standard fare of the raising of the colors, the national anthem, pledge of allegiance and a reading of the names of veterans who have died over the past 12 months. Brigadier General Anthony Mowhat of the Kansas Army National Guard will be the featured speaker and Frank Lowery will have a construction update for the All Veterans Memorial, specifically the Tablets of Honor project.
The Emporia Municipal Band will provide music before, during and after the ceremony.
As has been the case for years, the Memorial Day service will be broadcast on 14 KVOE, 96.9 FM and KVOE-TV at KVOE.com starting at 9:30 am.
Meanwhile, Chase County will have its All Veterans Memorial Day ceremony at 10 am Monday at the Cottonwood Falls All Veterans Memorial. The featured speaker will be Morris County Sheriff and retired Kansas National Guard Major Jay Simecka.
