The candidate filing and withdrawal deadline has passed at the local level.
In Lyon County, Emporian Gregg Stair, a Democrat, filed shortly before the noon deadline to serve as Lyon County commissioner for the First District. He will face Republican Ken Duft in the general election.
The filings mean longtime County Commissioner Scott Briggs has decided to end his tenure on the board. Briggs has served the First District since 2006 and has told KVOE News “16 years is more than long enough.”
The Lyon County ballot has also included precinct committee and township clerk positions.
At the state level, the only general election — at least for now — involves 60th District Representative Mark Schreiber, a Republican, and Democrat Mic McGuire. 13th District Representative Joe Newland, a Republican, and 76th District Representative Eric Smith, also a Republican, are running unopposed but the filing deadline at the state and federal level is June 10.
For governor, incumbents Laura Kelly and running mate David Toland, both Democrats, have a primary challenge from Richard Karnowski and Barry Franco. Republican Derek Schmidt, currently the state attorney general, announced Roger Marshall’s longtime communication director, Katie Sawyer, as his running mate shortly after they filed Wednesday. The Schmidt-Sawyer campaign has a primary challenge from Arlyn Briggs and Lance Berland.
For other state positions:
*The attorney general position has Kris Kobach, Tony Mattivi and Kellie Warren on the Republican side. Chris Mann is the only Democrat candidate.
*The insurance commissioner position features incumbent Republican Vicki Schmidt and Democrat challenger Kiel Corkran.
*The state treasurer position involves Democrat incumbent Lynn Rogers and Republican challengers Steven Johnson and Caryn Tyson.
The secretary of state job includes Republican incumbent Scott Schwab and challenger Mike Brown. Jenna Repass is the only Democrat in the race.
In federal races, House Second District Republican Jake LaTurner will have a general election challenge from Democrat Patrick Schmidt. Senator Jerry Moran, a Republican, has a primary challenge from Joan Farr. Mike Andra, Paul Buskirk, Mark Holland, Robert Klingenberg, Michael Soetart and Patrick Wiesner are the Democrats seeking the nomination.
