The biggest field in Unbound Gravel history is in Emporia this week.
Around 4,000 cyclists are here to test their mettle in the Flint Hills, including two-time women’s champion Amanda Nauman, a guest on KVOE’s Morning Show on Thursday. She says Unbound has been a trailblazer for gravel cycling.
Also on Thursday’s Morning Show, 2015 men’s winner Yuri Hauswald spoke about how residents here have become part of his unofficial family. As such, he and other riders feel it’s important to give back to the community. This year, that has included a fundraising ride Thursday — with the help of Gravel City Roasters owner Angie Baker — for Emporia’s Bloom House facility helping homeless youths.
Unbound Marketing Manager Kristi Mohn was part of the first Gravel Cycling Hall of Fame induction class Wednesday. She called it a humbling honor — and she says cycling events like Unbound can lead to stronger communities.
The Unbound XL launches at 3 pm Friday, with all other rides beginning Saturday morning. KVOE’s Talk of Emporia on Friday will take place from the packet pickup headquarters at the Lyon County History Center.
