The first — and longest — race in Unbound Gravel 2022 launches Friday afternoon.
Riders in the Unbound XL are taking off at 3 pm from Sixth and Mechanic. Riders are officially going 349 miles for the race this year.
Meanwhile, riders in all other distances launch Saturday from Sixth and Commercial — and riders like two-time women’s champion Amanda Nauman are expecting some issues due to recent rainfall.
2015 men’s winner Yuri Hauswald is in the 50-mile ride after breaking a leg Jan. 9. He’s glad to be riding in Emporia, and he’s glad to see the sport of gravel cycling grow as much as it has just in the past decade.
Riders on Saturday will have staggered start times for the 200-, 100-, 50- and 25-mile rides along with the juniors. Look for more information about Unbound Gravel on the KVOE.com news and sports pages this weekend.
