Gas prices are still under the national average in and around Emporia, but that’s small comfort when gas prices have shot up 80 cents in less than a month.
Most local gas stations are still charging $4.58 or $4.59 a gallon, but several stations have jumped to $4.78 or $4.79 a gallon. Area gas stations were at or around $3.99 a gallon as of the start of the Memorial Day weekend. Areawide, gas is as high as $4.69 in Council Grove, $4.68 in Melvern and $4.65 in Lebo.
While gas prices have shot up areawide, diesel has largely stayed flat between $5.15 and $5.30 a gallon.
