More roadwork is coming within the city of Emporia this week.
The City Engineering Department has announced it is beginning the annual street rehab project with 11 segments of road set to significant work. The list of roads includes:
Prairie Lane
Sherwood Way (Mayfair St. to Washington Pk.)
Neosho Street (12th to 15th)
14th Ave. (State to Neosho)
Cottonwood Street (10th to 12th)
Rural Street (3rd to 6th)
South Merchant Street
9th Ave. (Elm to Prairie St.)
9th Ave. (West St. to Lawrence St.)
Woodland Street (9th Ave. to 12th Ave.)
Grove Ave. (Lincoln St. to Garfield St.)
All projects will include mill and overlay work. With already constricted traffic throughout the city due to ongoing road improvement projects on 12th and sixth, some may be concerned what additional congestion the coming work will cause.
City Engineer Jim Ubert says his department is cognizant of these concerns and they have taken steps to avoid any more significant traffic disruptions.
Concrete work has already begun on project sites according to Ubert. The entire project is expected to last up to three months, weather permitting.
At the same time, the city will be working on sidewalk improvements on 9th Street and Burns to the Lyon County Fairgrounds. A new barrier wall is also scheduled to be installed along 15th Street and the Evergy substation at I-35 with that project estimated to take two months to complete weather permitting.
The Street Rehab project will not be the end of local road work according to Ubert as he tells KVOE News the annual Kansas Department of Transportation City Connecting Link Program will be going out to bid at some point next month with work likely to begin in September at the earliest.
