Higher-than-normal water releases continue at two area lakes managed by the US Army Corps of Engineers, although the flows have slowed somewhat.
Corps of Engineers staffers are now sending 1,000 cubic feet of water per second downstream from Melvern Lake. That’s down from the 1,500 cfs on Sunday with the lake just over three feet above normal elevation.
The discharge from John Redmond is still above 12,600 cfs. The lake is still around six feet below flood pool and is over 21 feet above normal elevation. That particular discharge may stay higher-than-normal for several days. The Neosho River at Neosho Rapids is has been below flood stage of 22 feet for almost a week, but it is still over 17 feet as of Wednesday morning.
The discharges follow four separate rounds of flooding across central Lyon County alone from mid-May to late last week.
