Well over 100 people gathered at the National Memorial to Fallen Educators for Friday’s rededication as part of the National Teachers Hall of Fame induction activities.
Several speakers were at the podium. Among them: Anthony Salvatore, an administrator in Newtown, Connecticut, at the time of the Sandy Hook school shooting that led to the memorial.
60th District Kansas House Representative Mark Schreiber urged people to remember the sacrifices of those on the memorial’s granite tablets.
Kansas US Senator Roger Marshall, appearing at the memorial, and fellow Kansas Senator Jerry Moran set the stage in Congress for the memorial to get national designation.
KVOE aired the rededication on KVOE-TV at KVOE.com and also via Facebook live. Sixteen teachers, administrators, custodians and other staffers were added this year. Fourteen were added from 2020 and 2021 because induction activities couldn’t be held the last two years due to COVID-19. Two — both teachers in the Uvalde, Texas, massacre from last month — were added for this year.
Activities conclude Friday night with the official inductions at Emporia State’s Memorial Union Ballroom. The banquet activities begin at 5, with the ceremony at 7:30 pm.
