Residents from across the area took part in the Lyon County Extension Master Gardeners’ first Emporia Garden Tour in three years Saturday.
Rick and Colleen Mitchell had three properties up for viewing — 724, 726 and 730 Garfield. Colleen Mitchell says her time growing up on an Illinois farm set the stage for her getting into gardening.
Just down the street, Ed and Christine Kehres had their gardens up for display at 716 Garfield. Christine Kehres says gardening came early to her as well. She also says she’s drawn to relatively unique perennials.
Extension’s demonstration garden at the Lyon County Fairgrounds was also part of the tour — in more ways than one. Residents who had their passports signed could pick up a bag of daffodil bulbs.
The tour draws attention both to the gardens involved and the Master Gardener program, which is designed as a volunteer-based venture letting those involved learn more about horticulture and then help to educate others around them.
