One of the six defendants in the Jesus Avila murder case has accepted a plea agreement involving lesser charges than what was originally announced.
Armando Nunez accepted a plea agreement last week, pleading no contest to interference with law enforcement, attempted burglary of a vehicle with intent to steal a firearm and criminal damage to property.
Nunez was originally charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, aggravated robbery, conspiracy to commit aggravated robbery, arson, theft and interference with law enforcement. Before the plea, the charge list had been reduced to aggravated robbery and interference.
While Nunez awaits sentencing at 10 am July 15, a decision on a second defendant’s path forward is still pending. Prosecutors and defense attorneys representing Jordy Cornejo-Campoverde reached an agreement to take his trial off the docket in late April, replacing those proceedings with a status hearing Aug. 12. Assistant County Attorney Amy Aranda has told KVOE News the agreement called for trial to be delayed and says it is not a plea at this time. Defense attorney Rick Meier has said no plea has been entered, instead telling KVOE News Cornejo-Campoverde will return to court once all the cases are finished with the other five defendants.
Cornejo-Campoverde is accused of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder and several other charges in Avila’s death from September 2017.
