From pops to earth-shattering kabooms, ’tis the season for fireworks across the KVOE listening area.
The sales and discharge window officially opened at 10 am, and Emporia Fire Marshal Reason Bradford had some safety tips during a recent Newsmaker segment. He says people should do some basic research on the fireworks they are buying.
Residents should also have a special container nearby to dispose of their fireworks so they don’t smolder and catch fire. Children should always be supervised.
There are several legal items to consider when shooting off fireworks in the city limits. Fireworks can’t be discharged from city streets. They also cannot be discharged in park boundaries, the Emporia Golf Course, city parking lots, recreational fields, the David Traylor Zoo, Lee Beran Recreation Center or Jones Aquatic Center parking lots. Fireworks are forbidden within 200 square feet of a hospital, school or nursing home property lines.
Emporia’s annual fireworks show will be July 3 at Emporia State University.
