The rainfall from Saturday morning and a risk of lightning led organizers of Emporia’s Vote No rally to postpone the event.
The rally was set for 10 am Saturday on the north steps of White Auditorium. it will now be at 10 am July 9, again on the civic center’s north steps. Organizers are planning to use the same format, including a set list of speakers and time for short speeches from community members.
The rally was organized immediately after the US Supreme Court’s decision to reverse Roe v Wade late last month, but it also comes wih a significant question on the state ballot for the Aug. 2 primary. The vote on House Concurrent Resolution 5003, called the Value Them Both amendment by supporters, asks residents to decide whether to let state lawmakers regulate abortion rights through legislative action while maintaining there is no constitutional right to the practice or to state funding — a yes vote. A no vote would maintain abortion’s current legal status and recognized right in the Kansas Constitution as indicated by the Kansas Supreme Court several years ago.
