The holidays are a prime time for fraud schemes. So is summer, and Emporia Police officers Jaffar Agha and JT Klaurens had tips on spotting fraud schemes during the KVOE Morning Show’s latest J and J segment.
Agha says scammers increasingly try to show they are with well-known organizations, including utility companies, medical facilities, federal or state agencies, businesses and even law enforcement. This includes phone calls, but it also includes emails — and it can be difficult to spot any differences between legitimate and illegitimate emails at first glance. It can also include threats of action by law enforcement.
You may be asked to pay scammers with gift cards or money transfer. The longstanding check fraud scheme is still popular.
Scammers can be insistent at best and verbally abusive at worst.
Agha encouraged residents to let officers know whenever there is a scam attempt. He says the Federal Trade Commission has a good information page available online. The agency also shares its information directly to over 3,000 law enforcement departments nationwide. Click here for the link.
