With hotter days ahead in the coming weeks, residents are again being reminded to keep a close eye on the temperature and their back seats.
During the J&J Show on KVOE’s Morning Show Thursday, Emporia Police Officers Jaffar Agha and JT Klaurens discussed the dangers of leaving children alone in hot vehicles. Klaurens says this is an issue they deal with on a regular basis, especially during this time of year.
Agha says it does not take long for a vehicle to warm up, especially on days like Monday when heat index readings could reach up to 105 degrees. He says a vehicle’s internal temperature could be capable of reaching as high as 150 degrees, which is dangerous for anyone, but especially small children.
Not only do Emporia Police want residents to be mindful of temperatures inside of vehicles, but also outside of it. Agha and Klaurens want residents to remember to drink plenty of water when engaging in outdoor activities. Also they should take frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning if possible and move the most strenuous activities to the morning or evening hours.
