Oppressive heat is expected to be a regular occurrence over the next several days.
As such, the National Weather Service has placed Lyon, Coffey, Morris, Osage and Wabaunsee counties in a heat advisory from noon Monday until 9 pm Wednesday. A separate advisory is in place for Chase and Greenwood counties from noon Monday until 8 pm Wednesday, extending the alert one day from its original issuance.
Forecasts are calling for high temperatures near 100 degrees and heat index readings as high as 105 degrees on the Fourth of July. Highs are expected to remain in the upper 90s through Wednesday with the evening lows providing very little relief with temperatures only expected to briefly drop into the upper 70s in the late evening to overnight hours.
With the excessive heat in place, residents are reminded to take precautions to prevent any heat related illnesses. Drink plenty of water if outdoors, shift any and all strenuous activities to the morning or evening hours if possible and be sure to check on children, pets and elderly residents often.
