Lyon County Commissioners continue to make progress on the 2023 budget including dropping a projected mill levy increase.
Based on the latest budget draft presented by Lyon County Controller Dan Williams Thursday, the county is looking at a mill levy rate of 56.192 mills which is 2.911 mills higher than the previous year. Last week, commissioners managed to decrease the levy increase from 5.3 mills to 3.3 mills.
Despite the continuous declines and conscious decisions to lower projected expenses, Williams says they are doing all they can to keep the mill levy as close to flat as possible. With that in mind, he says prioritization of “needs and wants” will be crucial in the coming weeks.
Commissioner Scott Briggs agrees with Williams and says this means the county may not be able to fully grant all requested allocations this year. He tells KVOE News that outside agencies have to understand that they as an organization may have to receive a little less, to avoid giving up more as taxpayers.
The budget will have to be finalized by late August. The deadline for submitting notice to exceed the revenue-neutral rate is Jul. 20.
County commissioners will reconvene next Thursday at 9 am inside the Lyon County Courthouse Commission Chambers.
