Humane Society of the Flint Hills Director Stephanie Achille is asking residents to adopt pets after the Emporia Animal Shelter got full just before the Fourth of July weekend.
Achille appeared on the KVOE Morning Show on Friday to update the shelter situation. The facility had to close its doors July 3-5 at the peak of Emporia’s legal fireworks sales and discharge period. Musician Eric Martin provided a concert for the pets, and Animal Shelter staff also helped to care for the animals. Achille says this is troubling for the animals and also for the facility budget.
Besides asking residents to adopt pets, Achille left open a door for a new dog-specific rescue operation to help strays in much the same way Street Cats Club and other feline-specific rescue groups help local cats with issues like spaying and neutering or foster locations.
Shelter hours are 9 am-3 pm Wednesdays through Sundays. More information about the shelter is available by calling 620-340-6345.
