The Kansas City Royals outscored Cleveland 5-1 Sunday.
It was a balanced effort offensively Kyle Isbel drove in a run in the second inning and scored a run in the 6th inning. M.J. Melendez drove in two runs in the 3rd inning.
Andrew Benintendi drove in a run and scored a run in the 3rd inning. Hunter Dozer and Emmanuel Rivera also scored runs for the Royals.
Zack Greinke was the winning pitcher going 5 innings giving up no runs on 3 hits with 5 strikeouts. During the game, he threw the 50,000 pitch of his career.
He is now 1 of 2 active pitchers to reach that mark. Joining Justin Verlander.
Today the Royals host the Detroit Tigers. They will play a day-night doubleheader.
Brad Keller will be the starter in the first game with the first pitch set for 1:10p.
Daniel Lynch will be the starter in the 2nd game with the first pitch at 7:10 pm.
Both games will be broadcast on KVOE 1400AM/96.9FM.
Whit Merrifield left Sunday’s game with a toe injury. He is not in the starting line-up for Monday’s first game. A bone bruise on one of his toes has him in a walking boot. Listed as day to day.
This will end his 553 consecutive games played streak.
Andrew Benintendi was selected as the Royals’ representative for the All-Star game. It will be his first All-Star game.
The All-Star Game will be played Tuesday, July 19th in Los Angeles at Dodgers Stadium.
The Royals also made a trade Monday. They have acquired outfielder Drew Waters, right-handed pitcher Andrew Hoffmann, and infielder CJ Alexander from Atlanta for a Competitive Balance pick, 35th overall in the upcoming Draft. Waters, who is on the 40-man roster, will be optioned to Triple-A Omaha. Hoffman and Alexander will both be assigned to Double-A Northwest Arkansas.
