The City of Emporia says traffic has been partially restored to a major intersection following excavation work.
City Communications Manager Christine Johnson says Chestnut Street traffic south of 12th has reopened, but traffic on the north side of Chestnut remains closed and will stay off limits to drivers until the end of this week.
Westbound traffic will either need to turn north on Lawrence or turn south on Chestnut to get past the closure zone, which goes to Newman Regional Health’s easternmost entrance near its original building.
This signals the end is near for a lengthy waterline project. Work has been ongoing to replace cast-iron lines with PVC pipe between Chestnut and Grand for months. Current indications are the project could end this month.
