The Emporia Municipal Band’s summer concert season is over.

The final strains of James Barnes’ arrangement of “Home on the Range” had some extra emotion attached Thursday. Not only did the band’s traditional closer end the summer season, it marked the end of James Davis’ tenure as band director.

Davis has been associated with the band the past 35 years, the last seven as director and as a percussionist before taking over the band for Gary McCarty in 2015. A new director will likely be named later this year.
