An Americus woman suffered potentially serious injuries after a two-vehicle crash near the Lyon-Coffey county line Wednesday morning.
The crash was reported at Interstate 35 mile marker 142 southbound, 10 miles east of Emporia’s eastern city limits and between the Hartford-Neosho Rapids exit and the Lyon-Coffey county line, around 10:40 am.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says 59-year-old Wanda Kay Lara was southbound on I-35, driving a dump truck with the bed raised. The bed hit a bridge above the truck and landed on its passenger side, also hitting an unoccupied semi parked on the shoulder.
Lyon County Undersheriff John Koelsch says Lara was airlifted to Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka for care afterward. The Highway Patrol says Lara was not wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Koelsch says the wreck happened in a road construction zone, and southbound traffic was backed up for close to five miles after the wreck. It took over an hour for southbound traffic to start moving past the wreck site.
