Plumb Place is still not officially back up and running, however, it has a great head start due to behind-the-scenes work that has been ongoing for over the past year.
That’s according to United Way of the Flinthills Executive Director Mickey Edwards who spoke with Lyon County Commissioners during their weekly action meeting Thursday morning. According to Edwards, while a formal board of directors has yet to be appointed a tentative board was established last year with hopes of handling certain items that would see the agency get off to a strong start once approval is handed down from Lyon County District Court.
Plumb Place closed its doors back in 2020 after years of financial troubles and potential board member Deone Wilson says she is honored to be playing a part in addressing a major need within the community.
Edwards says while it is regrettable the agency had to close down, the last two years has provided a much-needed opportunity to reinvent and refocus the agency’s mission toward the needs of today’s women in crisis.
The agency has submitted requests of $25,000 from both the county and city governments to assist with the relaunch of services. Commissioners have taken the requests under consideration.
In other business, commissioners approved a proposal with Kirkham Michael and Associates, Inc. for Engineering Services for a future High-Risk Rural Roads project on Americus Road from Americus North to Highway 56 not to exceed $40,008.13. Plans are to widen the shoulders of the road by two feet with the project likely to begin sometime in 2024.
According to Lyon County Engineer Chip Woods, this has already been an arduous process due to a large amount of “hoops” Road and Bridge has had to jump through due to oversight by the Kansas Department of Transportation.
Woods says the project thus far has been a “learning experience” as it is the largest amount of involvement he has seen from an outside entity.
While the project is still a little less than two years away, Assistant Engineer Jim Brull says Road and Bridge crews will begin culvert expansion work in the next few weeks in preparation of the widening.
Lyon County Commissioners will reconvene for their weekly action meeting next Thursday at 9 am inside the Lyon County Courthouse Commission Chambers.
