Emporia State University has expanded its pre-existing relationship with Newman Regional Health.
Five years ago the university began its pre-medical fellowship program thanks to cooperative efforts between ESU alumni as a way to help foster and support incoming freshmen who are looking to be admitted to medical school in the future. Now, the fellowship has expanded to include a much more immersive opportunity for students thanks to a new clinical internship program.
Longwell says the program allows fellowship members to shadow Newman staff through several areas and specialties within the hospital. She says they wanted to give students as “broad” of an experience as possible.
Students receive roughly 120 hours of experience over the course of the six-week program. ESU senior Amaya Svenblad says the course can be intense, however, the schedule is very manageable.
She also tells KVOE the internship has broadened her understanding of certain areas of medicine she previously had no interest in.
Newman physicians Dr. Tim Harris and Dr. Bryce Heitman serve as mentors for the students. For more information on the fellowship, internship program and nursing department as a whole, visit Emporia.edu.
