The in-person half of the advance voting process is now complete.
Lyon County Clerk Tammy Vopat says turnout has been steady and strong, in large part because of House Concurrent Resolution 5003, otherwise known as the Value Them Both constitutional amendment that would have state lawmakers regulate abortion rights through legislative action and would essentially overrule the Kansas Supreme Court’s decision several years ago saying there is a constitutional right to abortion in Kansas.
Residents using the mail ballot process either need to turn in their ballots to the County Clerk’s Office or polling places by Tuesday — or have them postmarked by Tuesday — for them to count in the primary.
Deputy Election Officer Amie Jackson says around 2,550 people have already voted, whether at the County Courthouse, the offsite election event at the Fairgrounds Anderson Building or by mail. This puts the early voter turnout at around 12 percent of Lyon County’s registered voter total.
There are several races at the federal and state levels, but not much on local ballots. For Lyon, Coffey and Osage county voters, Kansas House 76th District Republican Eric Smith of Burlington has a challenge from Osage County’s Bob Harmon. The Coffey County Sheriff’s Office is also asking voters to approve a $20 million law enforcement center to replace the current jail.
Election Day is from 7 am to 7 pm Tuesday. KVOE News will have complete election results and reactions beginning shortly after the polls close.
