Classes officially begin Wednesday for USD 253 Emporia, and KVOE listeners got a sneak peek at the upcoming school year on the monthly Emporia Showcase with Superintendent Allison Anderson-Harder on Tuesday.
There is a lot of “newness” at the start of every school year, but there may well be more “new” this year than most. This marks the debut of the Jones Early Childhood Development Center after the long tenure of Maynard Early Childhood Center. Principal Joy McGhee says the new facility offers more space than Maynard. It also features new amenities and a modern layout for the kids.

Meanwhile, Southern Lyon County and Madison-Virgil also begin Wednesday. Most area districts get started Thursday, including Lebo-Waverly, Chase County, Hamilton, Council Grove, Lyndon, Santa Fe Trail and Marais des Cygnes Valley. USD 251 North Lyon County is the last area district to start with classes beginning Aug. 25. Burlington, Southern Coffey, Eureka and Osage City started earlier this month.
