Milling and overlay work on Sixth Ave. (US Highway 50) begins Monday and is expected to last through mid-October, however, it is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of road improvement work in the Emporia area.
During an appearance on KVOE’s Talk of Emporia Friday, City Engineer Jim Ubert laid out the plans for several upcoming projects. Planned work includes a waterline repair on Funston Street which Ubert says is a “emergency repair project” that was not originally planned.
Ubert says the city bid the project out Friday and they are hopeful to have a contract awarded “immediately” with work set to begin in mid-September. The paving work on Funston will have to be halted for the time being to allow for the waterline contractor to complete the needed repairs.
Ubert anticipates the work could last through October into November, however, an exact timeline is not readily available. He says the repaving work should be complete by the end of the year.
The Funston projects will overlap the annual street rehabilitation project which has been underway since June and includes 10 segments this year according to Ubert.
Ubert says the streets included in the rehabilitation project are selected during the winter through the city’s pavement management program. Concrete prep work is ongoing across Emporia at this time with a full project timeline pending.
