After a pair of small spikes in activity earlier this year, influenza activity is low in Lyon County at this time.
On KVOE’s Morning Show recently, Lyon County Public Health Emergency Preparedness Director Jennifer Millbern said there were small spikes in flu activity earlier this year, one in April and May and another over the past six weeks. Millbern and other health officials are tracking flu activity in Australia, which has seen an early onset of the virus.
Those trends have Millbern asking residents to vaccinate early — as soon as vaccines start becoming readily available next month.
Looking down the road, Millbern says an early start to the flu season may well mean adjustments for holiday planning, including gatherings for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The past two years have seen health officials warning about a possible “twindemic” of flu and COVID which have not come to pass. However, Millbern reminds residents there could be increased hospitalizations from either flu or COVID this upcoming fall and winter. If there are more hospitalizations for both viruses at the same time, there would be increased strain on hospital staffers until numbers subside.
