Area residents are invited — and encouraged — to attend an event designed to get people outdoors.
The sixth annual Vamos a Pescar celebration is coming Saturday to Emporia State’s Prophet Aquatic Research and Outreach Center for the second straight year. There will be activities inside the building and outside at King Lake. Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow leader Sally Sanchez says a fun day is coming for everybody who shows up.
PAROC Outreach and Engagement Coordinator Daphne Mayes says the facility is a perfect spot for Saturday’s event.
Indoor activities include hands-on learning activities and information about aquatic animals. Outdoor activities include an archery range, BB gun range and kayaking — and a whole lot of fishing-related information. Here’s What’s In Outdoors host Phil Taunton:
Free food, including hot dogs, hamburgers and fish tacos, will also be served.
Vamos a Pescar is aimed at Hispanic families, teaching them about fishing, the sport’s rules and regulations, as well as outdoor ethics and responsibility. USD 253 Migrant Education Coordinator Patricia Saenz-Reyes says Vamos has had a big impact on the local Hispanic community — and on her.
Vamos a Pescar has enjoyed a wealth of partnerships throughout its history, starting as a collaboration between the USD 253 Emporia Migrant Education Program, Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow and KVOE’s What’s In Outdoors and expanding from there. The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks quickly became involved, and the program is now gaining national attention for its effectiveness.
Activities are from 9 am to 1 pm.
