Evergy says a downed power line was responsible for Thursday’s outage that covered much of downtown Emporia and a significant part of south-central Emporia.
The outage was reported around 9 am near South Exchange and Potwin and was restored around 9:40 am. Evergy spokesperson Kaley Bohlen says a downed line led to the outage, although it’s unclear what led to the situation.
Initially, over 70 outages were reported from Sixth and Commercial south just beyond the Emporia city limits. Those outages were consolidated into one outage covering the same general area. Over 750 customers were ultimately affected. Around 20 near the downed line remain offline.
9:45 am Thursday
Downtown and south-central Emporia dealt with a significant power outage Thursday morning.
Initially, over 70 outages were reported from around Sixth and Commercial south past the David Traylor Zoo when the situation developed around 9 am. Those outages were consolidated into one outage affecting over 750 Evergy customers, including the Lyon County Courthouse, although power was restored quickly enough so the County Commission meeting and court hearings could take place. The Friendship Center in the 200 block of West Logan may serve its lunch meals on a slightly delayed schedule because of the outage.
Numerous stoplights in downtown Emporia were rendered inoperable during the outage.
The core of the outage was reported as handled by 9:45 am, although there is still a small-scale outage near Logan Avenue Elementary School.
