When Emporia High needed things to go its way, it happened late in Friday’s game against Pittsburg.
Two fumbles resulted in scores for the Spartans, which included a game-winning 25-yard field goal by Alex Allemang in overtime to give the Spartans a 25-22 victory over the Purple Dragons.
EHS trailed 22-14 when it forced its first fumble, which resulted in a 22-yard touchdown run and a 2-point conversion by Fred Jackson to tie it at 22 with 2:57 left in regulation. The Spartans’ chances for overtime improved after Pittsburg kicker Jackson McKechnie missed a 27-yard field goal with 27 seconds left.
A second Pittsburg fumble recovered by Kyle Obermeyer on the first play of overtime set up the game-winning field goal.
EHS took an early 7-0 lead with 4:05 left in the first quarter on a 24-yard touchdown reception by Sheldon Stewart. Pittsburg pulled within one prior to the end of the first quarter and then took a 14-7 lead with over two minutes to play before halftime.
Bobby Trujillo tied the game on a 52-yard touchdown run with 1:28 left before half.
Pittsburg got a 9-yard touchdown by Gabe Kimzey in the third quarter after a mishandled punt by the Spartans.
Trujillo led the Spartans with 17 carries for 138 yards and a touchdown and three sacks.
EHS (1-0) hosts Liberal next Friday at Welch Stadium.
