Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it. That was the clear message behind an annual patriotic display near Melvern Sunday.
Area residents, veterans and the Patriot Guard Riders all convened at the Interstate 35 160 exit near Melvern for the 20th annual Random Acts of Patriotism event in recognition of the 2001 9/11 terrorist attacks. Organizer John Kitt says he is proud to see the level of patriotism on display as it is something he believes is beginning to “fall to the wayside” in recent years.
Kitt says they continue to encourage younger residents to be involved with the event each year as a large portion of the population now was either too young to remember the events of 2001 or were not born yet. He says it is our duty as Americans to ensure we pass on both the history and significance of events such as 9/11 to younger generations as it will soon fall on them to do the same.
More than 60 flags adorned the overpass on exit 160 from sun up to sun down Sunday. This was the 20th year for the Random Acts of Patriotism event.
On Sept. 11, 2001 Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives after hijacked planes crashed into both World Trade Center towers, the Pentagon and a field outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
