Three Emporia State ventures will receive funding if the Kansas Board of Regents’ unified appropriations request is approved.
Before ending their monthly meeting Thursday, the Regents approved over $250 million in new support for higher education.
For Emporia State, SMaRT Kansas 21: Science and Math Recruitment of Teachers in Kansas for the 21st Century would receive over $500,000 under the Regents plan. The Prophet Aquatic Research and Outreach Center would receive $300,000. Academic programming for the Cyber Security Center would receive over $1 million.
Overall, the Regents say the requested funds would help to expand student financial aid and “micro-internship opportunities” as well as an advising program for community colleges working with high school students, a facilities renewal initiative and a cybersecurity plan. Part of the Building a Talent Pipeline plan includes $30 million to expand the Regents’ Distinguished Faculty plan to recruit and retain both faculty and staff — coming one day after the Regents approved Emporia State’s plan to realign programs including a seven-percent staff cut.
