The statewide plan to build out the electric vehicle charging network is getting almost $40 million from the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Formula Program.
This is a five-year program, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation, and will go to the Charge Up Kansas NEVI Plan. Initial funds will be matched with local dollars to build direct-current fast chargers on several designated charging corridors, including Interstate 35 and the Kansas Turnpike. Emporia is one of the locations designated for a fast charger.
The corridor will also involve Interstates 135 and 70, as well as US Highways 81 and 400. Once it’s built out, there will be nearly 1,600 miles of Kansas highways with fast-charging stations for drivers.
