With events such as Dia de Los Muertos becoming a mainstay of the Emporia community each year, its no surprise that the newest event rooted in Hispanic heritage saw a solid turnout Saturday.
Visit Emporia and Hispanics of Today and Tomorrow hosted the inaugural Empovia event on the north side of Peter Pan Park. The event is Emporia’s take on ciclovias, a type of event popular in many Spanish countries such as Bolivia, Argentina, Mexico and others.
The involves closing down a section of streets to motorized vehicles while highlighting “human-powered movement” such as walking, running and cycling. Empovia was just the latest event celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in the local community.
Visit Emporia Director Lelan Dains says the turnout for Saturday’s event and the diversity amongst those in attendance is something residents should be very proud of.
Sally Sanchez of HOTT says she is proud to see Emporia embracing these traditional Hispanic events.
Several food trucks, the Emporia Arts Center’s Art Mobile, the Emporia Recreation Commission and many local bike shops were on hand for the event as well.
