US Second District Congressional candidate Patrick Schmidt says Republicans supporting former president Donald Trump as the investigation continues into classified documents taken out of Washington DC, including his opponent, Jake LaTurner, are wrong to do so.
Schmidt is a former intelligence officer in the US Navy, and he says the Mar-a-Lago situation should not have happened.
At a small meet-and-greet in Emporia on Sunday, Schmidt also criticized LaTurner for his stance on reproductive issues, notably abortion, after Kansas voters turned down House Concurrent Resolution 5003, which would have meant lawmakers, not the Kansas Supreme Court, would have the final say on abortion regulations.
LaTurner has represented the district since 2018. The Second currently involves Coffey and Osage counties but is expanding to include Lyon, Chase, Morris and Wabaunsee counties next year, thanks to redistricting by the Kansas Legislature earlier this year.
