United Way of the Flint Hills staff and volunteers took a short break from collecting dollars in order to collect food donations Thursday.
The United Way held its third annual Drive-Thru Food Drive at the Lyon County Fairgrounds Anderson Building and organizers were busy from start to finish. The food drive began back in 2020 after the COVID-19 pandemic essentially erased most of the agency’s regular fundraising campaign activities from the community calendar.
United Way CEO Mickey Edwards says the food drive was one of the few silver linings that came from the pandemic.
United Way campaign drive co-chair Lisa Hayes says this year’s drive has gotten off to a strong start. She says she is always cognisant of the community’s willingness to step up and support any and all needs, that being said, she tells KVOE News it still takes her breath away to see that willingness put into action.
The food drive collected about 300 pounds of food. Donations will support Emporia Salvation Army, SOS and Morris County Care and Share.
Monetary donations were also accepted in addition to non-perishable food items, cleaning products and personal care items. If you would like to donate to the United Way’s annual fundraising campaign you may do so online at Unitedwayoftheflinthills.org/donate.
