It was a little too late to get something going for the Emporia High football team Friday night against Topeka High.
The Spartans scored all their points in the fourth quarter in a 34-21 loss to the Trojans.
EHS trailed just 7-0 at halftime after Topeka High got an Elijah Kincade 26-yard touchdown reception with 9:29 to go in the second quarter.
The Trojans got a Peyton Wheat 25-yard touchdown with 6:32 left in the third.
Topeka High made it 20-0 with 6:17 to play on a 1-yard touchdown run by BJ Canady.
EHS immediately responded with Cooper Rech scoring on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Sheldon Stewart with 5:41 remaining.
Topeka High a rushing touchdown with 4:06 left before EHS made it 27-15 on a 4-yard run by Stewart. The Trojans got a 61-yard run by Isiah Kincade to make it 34-15. Stewart found Parker Leeds for a 1-yard touchdown reception with 1:09 to play.
The Spartans finished with 254 yards of total offense, with 155 of them coming in the fourth quarter.
Derrick Keys led the Spartans on the ground with 40 yards on 14 carries.
Stewart was 10-for-20 for 164 yards and two touchdowns, while also having 33 yards and a rushing touchdown.
Rech was the Spartans’ leading receiver with two catches for 65 yards.
EHS will host Manhattan next Friday at Welch Stadium for Homecoming. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
In other games involving the Centennial League, Manhattan edged Washburn Rural 28-25 and Junction City defeated Bishop Carroll, 28-21.
