The town of Madison is in the early stages of a citywide restoration effort.
Led by Andy Massoth and Jason and Amy McClelland, the effort is designed to position Madison for significant infill development over the next several years.
Massoth graduated from Madison High School in the early 1980s and moved away, but he says he learned of a project to restore Madison’s American Legion hall, build a veterans memorial and start a veterans museum about two years ago. That got him thinking about a larger project.
The McClellands are life-long Madison residents and started revitalization work with a gas station a decade ago. Jason McClelland says that expanded to other property purchases before Massoth reached out to re-energize the conversation.
The ultimate goal is to get businesses into those storefronts, and work is now underway to remove tanks from an old gas station on Main Street. Over the next year, that property will be a non-functioning Skelly gas station.
McClelland says the community response has been “outstanding,” with a lot of residents wanting this kind of project for years. The bulk of the project will be privately funded, but McClelland says the goal is to get some grant funding and add investors for the work ahead.
