The Emporia State football team held on for a 42-35 win over Washburn in the 118th renewal of the second oldest active rivalry in Division II college football Saturday.
Emporia State quarterback Braden Gleason threw for 300 yards and 4 touchdowns.
Gleason threw touchdown passes to Tommy Zimmerman, Tyler Kahmann, Jaylen Varner and Cory Thomas for touchdowns. Canaan Brooks and Billy Ross Jr scored rushing touchdowns for the Hornets. He has now thrown 48 touchdown passes for his career. That puts him at number 4 on the career list behind Braxton Marstalls 87, Brent Wilsons 84 and Tyler Eckenrodes 60.
Emporia State jumped out to a 14-0 lead and never trailed. The Hornets were leading 42-14 before Washburn scored 21 unanswered points but it was to late for Washburn.
With the win the Hornets improve to 3-2 for the season. Washburn falls to 3-2.
Emporia State will host Central Missouri next Saturday with kick off set for 1pm.
