After 16 years, Lyon County District One Commissioner Scott Briggs is now into the final three months of his time on the commission.
Briggs sat down with KVOE on a recent installment of the Talk of Emporia to discuss his career and look ahead to the future. Briggs admits that he originally had no intention of running for political office, however, he had some encouragement from former 17th District Senator Jerry Karr.
Briggs says there were several proud accomplishments for the commission over the past 16 years, one of which he says was the passage of the countywide sales tax.
Where you have triumph you will have some stumbles, and Briggs says he believes the handling of the city/county comprehensive plan falls under that category. Briggs stated the plan itself is “good” and a necessity for any community, however, he feels there were some topics that could have been better conveyed to the general public.
When asked why he has now decided to step down from the commission, Briggs stated “16 years is too long for anyone.” He says oftentimes an individual’s unwillingness to make room for change can be a detriment to the entire community.
Briggs’ seat will be filled by either Ken Duft or Greg Stair, both of whom are on the ballot for the District 1 seat on the Nov. 8 general election. You can hear the full interview with Briggs in the KVOE.com Audio Vault.
