Emporia’s First Congregational Church held a special birthday party celebrating an important milestone Sunday afternoon.
The church was recognizing its 165th anniversary with live music, a bounce house, balloons and of course plenty of birthday cake. Established in 1857, longtime church member Lesley Draper says the church’s history dates back to some of the very first settlers in our nation’s history.
When it comes to what makes the church a special place, Draper says it is the sense of family individuals experience when they walk through its doors.
In its 165 years of existence, the church has had a major philanthropic impact both locally and internationally thanks to partnerships with the Happy Life Children’s Home in Kenya and the establishment of the new Baby Closet at the church. The church is currently under the leadership of interim pastor Dr. Cheryl Henson.
